One more record to prove that it is easy to fall for and follow the big things, that make loud noises, sparkle and glitter in the night and impress you by being big, but that it is much more rewarding and satisfying to find the small and complex things that differentiate between the bland and the important. When you are still young, fast relief seems more important, but as you grow mature you start to look for longlasting relationships that satisfy you on more than just one level. Natsat hold it all back, breathe in without breathing out, entangle you completely and suck you in. The debut album by Natsat has spun in my CD player for three times in a row and hasn't left a place close by ever since. The French trio do a sort of post-rock that lingers half-way between a little jazz here and some more rock there and some avant-garde on the other edge. The rock coming from the drums and the electric guitars, the jazz coming from the guest musicians (playing clarinette, saxophone and some special effects), and the avant-garde you'll figure out for yourself. But the most important thing is how they impeccably handle dynamics and tension? Natsat build up tension with time by spinning an intricate web of guitar, bass and drums, using some solo reed or horns here and there, but whenever any other band would really get going with a boom and start to blow you away, the just change the tonality a little and keep tension on high level in an almost magical way. I am tempted to call "Angle" the tantra-version of postrock.
The same praise that went to Godspeed! You Black Emperor a few years back for masterfully building up big floodwaves of dynamics and pure force in an orchestral way, should go to Natsat now for being able to produce energy that sustainably flows without being released.
"Angle" is still just a record with great music on it.
I do hope that Natsat will keep on their chosen path and remain defenders of their right not to kick you in the face with blandness.
